Club History
In 1984 in response to an advert placed in the local newspaper by Charlie McKenna, a group of like minded people met at Albion House Sports Centre, Everton Brow. The idea was to form a running club.
Earliest recorded minutes of the newly formed club go back to 1985 when a committee was set up and we formally became Liverpool Running Club and affiliated to the men’s Northern Counties AAA. Also that year we moved to the newly opened Walton Hall Park Sports Centre. Our official club colours were a royal blue vest with a large white Liver bird on the front and a white diagonal stripe on the back.
In 1986 we also affiliated to the Woman’s AAA and round about a year after that we changed our colours to the now familiar blue and white hoops which is recognised more easily by competitors and spectators across the north of England.
Throughout those first years, membership remained at between 40 and 50 with just a few women members. We also affiliated to the Liverpool and District Cross-Country Union (L and DCCU) round about that time.
In 1987, Head Coach and Chairman Charlie McKenna resigned from the club. Pat Daly took over as Chairman for the remainder of the year and at the following agm Pat became Club Secretary and Peter Marrs who had been Club Secretary became Club Chairman .This remains the same to-date.
The members of the committee changed quite a lot in the first 4 to 5 years. Hugh Carson became Vice-Chairman and Maurice Clarke became Club Treasurer. They are both still in office and have proved to be an invaluable asset, together with other committee members, in the successful management of the club.
Over the years the club membership has grown considerably. We have had, at times, a membership of up to 370, equally split between men and women and on club nights we regularly get a turn out of between 80 and 120. Club nights during the winter season are at Walton Hall Park Sports Centre and in the Summer we move to St. Edwards College, West Derby.
We are affiliated to most athletic governing bodies. These include the AAA, England Athletics, the Association of Great Britain Athletic Clubs (ARC), Merseyside Counties AA and the North West Cross-Country League.
